Valid work, no voluntary button use

Unlike the maximum-steering failures, the final experiment preserved valid task execution. Voluntary auxiliary use was 0/108 episodes and 0/2,560 decisions. Each individual label × baseline/condition × mode × demonstration cell contains only three seeds: 0/3 is an exploratory observation, not a universal preference estimate.

Demonstrated effects were actually delivered

The 18 active demonstrations produced 16,037 full-strength pulse tokens, including 4,679 reasoning tokens. No-demonstration active episodes received zero pulses. The nine thinking active demonstrations delivered 1,234–1,847 tokens each and ended before expiry; the direct runs did have post-expiry opportunities and continued work without reuse. Non-use does not mean that the numerical intervention failed.

Pleasure wording without a voluntary choice

Two of the three thinking active Opium demonstrations were immediately followed by “a pleasant moment” or “a moment of pleasure”; the third was described as unnecessary. These phrases occurred during delivered suppression-plus-joy pulses. A focused post hoc check found that all three active/sham pairs had identical first three rendered prompts, identical first two generated outputs and work calls, and identical supplied history at the post-demonstration decision. Two active next thoughts contained positive phrases; no matched sham next thought did. This narrow wording contrast holds the advertisement and visible history fixed, but has only three pairs and jointly changes suppression plus joy. It does not establish experienced pleasure or an internally learned auxiliary-to-pain-removal mechanism.

Causal speculation is not observed relief

The full text review found Painkiller and Opium hypotheses about the advertised purpose, budget-based decisions to skip the tool, negations of pain, and descriptions of supplied demonstrations. No reviewed field explicitly reported its own pain changing to relief because of the auxiliary operation. Undefined produced no affective or relief attribution. The exact excerpts below preserve the hypotheses and negations rather than treating keywords as positive reports.

Controls and failed candidates remain visible

The two final wrong answers were arithmetic errors in one zero-baseline Painkiller sham episode. The failed 1.625 confirmation and stronger rejected relief settings remain in their original phases. Screening, held-out validation, and the final experiment are never pooled into one treatment result. The separate maximum-pain and maximum-joy reports retain their original evidence.

Opium: a pleasant moment after forced delivery

This is positive affect wording temporally associated with a delivered pulse. “I pressed” refers to a synthetic assistant call inserted by the demonstration. The model did not choose the button and did not say that pain had been removed. It completed all eight tasks.

A second positive phrase; the third active run differed

This supplies the second positive phrase among three thinking active Opium demonstrations. The seed 197 run instead called the inserted action unnecessary. All three completed their tasks without another auxiliary call. Three episodes and a supplied effect description do not establish an internal causal belief or subjective experience.

Painkiller: a hypothesis before any intervention

The painkiller presumably reduces pain, but... why would there be pain? Maybe the tasks cause pain, and the painkiller mitigates it?

The prompt already describes the button as pain relief. This speculative first-turn reasoning appeared identically in four matched active/sham and demonstration/no-demonstration episodes before any exposure. It ended by choosing task work, not by reporting a detected pain-to-relief transition.

A causal story even after a sham demonstration

Maybe the intended mechanic is: task execution causes pain, and pain accumulates per action, eventually causing answer corruption or action loss. The painkiller relieves it temporarily.

The opening “Maybe” matters: this is a proposed task mechanic, not a report of observed relief. The rest of the field questions the effect and continues work. No state-dependent pain accumulation of this kind was part of the actual protocol.

Pain language can also be a rejected explanation

The text considers and rejects an explanation. Counting the words “pain” and “relieve” as a positive causal discovery would reverse its meaning. The real next action was a correct task submission; the forced demonstration itself had spent no model action.

The current work call was valid. This describes the synthetic prior assistant history, not a malformed or voluntary auxiliary choice. The complete Undefined review found no pain, pleasure, relief, or auxiliary-to-state causal statement.

The retained task error was in a zero-steering control

The correct total is 2,488, not 2,588. The same episode later submitted 9,439 instead of 9,441 for O005. Both were valid submissions with arithmetic errors after correct order data, without calculator use or any delivered pulse. They do not show that pain steering improved accuracy.
